“You will ask in my name.<\/em>\u201d By \u201cname,\u201d Jesus means \u201cnature.\u201d He isn\u2019t saying, \u201cYou will use my name as a magic word to get what you want from the Father.\u201d He\u2019s saying, \u201cYou will be so intimate with me that you will be one with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"In that day<\/em> . . .\u201d The day Jesus is speaking of isn\u2019t a day in the future; it\u2019s here and now. It\u2019s a day of undisturbed relationship between God and his child. Just as Jesus stood blameless in the presence of his Father, so by the baptism of the Spirit are we lifted into relationship with him: \u201c. . . that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us\u201d (John 17:21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"The Father himself loves you.<\/em>\u201d The union is complete and absolute. Our Lord doesn\u2019t mean that your external life will be free of complexity and confusion, but that just as he knew the Father\u2019s heart and mind, you too will know it. By the baptism of the Holy Spirit, he will lift you into the heavenly places, where he can reveal God\u2019s counsels to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"My Father will give you whatever you ask in my name<\/em>\u201d (16:23). Jesus is saying that God will recognize our prayers. What a challenge! By the power of the resurrection and the ascension, by the sent-down Holy Spirit, we can be lifted into such a relationship with the Father that we are at one with his sovereign will, just as Jesus was. In this wonderful position, we can pray to God in his name\u2014in his nature\u2014which is gifted to us by the Holy Spirit, and whatever we ask will be given.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
