The scribe Baruch was seeking much more than his life from God; he wanted great things for himself and was full of self-pity that he hadn\u2019t gotten them. \u201cWoe to me!\u201d he lamented. \u201cThe Lord has added sorrow to my pain\u201d (Jeremiah 45:3). God told Baruch to stop seeking great things for himself, highlighting the futility of earthly blessings: \u201cFor I will bring disaster on all people\u201d (v. 5). Yet God didn\u2019t send Baruch away empty-handed. Instead, he said, \u201cI will let you escape with your life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What more do we want than life? It is the essential thing. So many of us are caught up in the show of things\u2014not necessarily in possessions, but in blessings. Both blessings and possessions will go one day, but there is something grander that will never go: the life that is \u201chidden with Christ in God\u201d (Colossians 3:3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Are you prepared to let God take you into union with him? Are you prepared to stop paying attention to the things you consider \u201cgreat\u201d? To abandon entirely and let go? The test of abandonment lies in refusing to say, \u201cBut what about this?\u201d Beware of such questions. They mean that you don\u2019t really trust God\u2014not enough to abandon yourself to him. The moment you truly abandon yourself to God, you no longer worry about what he is going to do. Abandonment means refusing yourself the luxury of asking questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reason people are tired of life is that God hasn\u2019t given them anything; they haven\u2019t received their life from him. The way out is abandonment. When you do abandon yourself to him, you will be the most surprised and delighted creature on earth: God has got you absolutely and has given you your life! If you\u2019re not in this place, it is because of either disobedience or a refusal to be simple enough.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
